Chipperfield - Summer Solstice Walk and Picnic: 5 miles and 4.5 miles

Join us for our annual Summer Solstice 'figure of eight' Walk and Picnic

Our morning walk is about 5 miles in a clockwise direction by way of Commonwood, Flaunden and Belsize, returning to Chipperfield around 12.45 - 1pm for our shared picnic.

In the afternoon, starting at 1.30 pm, our 4.5 mile walk will also be in an clockwise direction towards Scatterdells Wood and Whippendell Bottom, returning to Chipperfield around 3.30 - 4pm

You are welcome to come on either, or both, walks - we will be walking mainly along tracks and footpaths across open fields and through woods with some hills.  There are 5 stiles along the morning route..

"Chipperfield nestles on the edge of the chalky Chilterns around 150 metres above sea level.  The Common (which has Green Flag status) extends over 100 acres.  It has a long well-documented history of ownership and use.  From ancient bronze age burial mounds, to once being owned as a royal hunting estate, through the land managed by a monastery, to private ownership, and finally to today being a publicly owned.  Each point in history left its mark and the remnants of each of these can be seen around the site.

There are eight large mature sweet chestnut trees of great importance estimated to be around 400 years old; two burial mounds dating from the early Bronze Age which are protected as Scheduled Ancient Monuments, and an ancient pond, known as Apostles Pond, thought to have been created in the 14th Century, after the land was donated to the Dominican Black Friars.  In 1714 the original Twelve Apostles Lime trees were planted around the pond by owners of the manor, they were replaced in the 1980's when the original Apostles were becoming dilapidated."
