Frequently Asked Questions
New to Finchley & Hornsey Ramblers, or thinking of joining a walk? Here are the answers to the questions we hear most often.
Getting started
π₯Ύ How do I join?
Join via the main Ramblers website or our group page at ramblers.org.uk/finchley-hornsey. You can also join through the Ramblers App. There is a discount for Direct Debit.
π Can I try a walk first?
Yes. You can try two or three walks before joining. Once you are a member, you can join our WhatsApp group for walk updates, lift shares and photos.
π Where do you walk?
Mostly circular walks in the Chilterns, Hertfordshire and neighbouring counties. Check this site or the Ramblers App often β new walks can appear at short notice.
π What ages are welcome?
All ages are welcome. Under-18s must be accompanied by an adult. Most current members are over 50, but newcomers of any age will find a warm welcome.
On the day
β±οΈ How long are the walks?
Typically 5 to 10+ miles, averaging about 2 mph including stops. Start time is usually 10.30am β always check the walk details. Most walks are on Sundays, with occasional midweek walks (often Wednesdays).
π How do I get to the start?
Many walks are reachable by bus, rail or tube. If not, and you do not have a car, members often arrange car shares.
π What should I bring?
Walking boots or shoes, waterproof jacket, walking trousers (not jeans), a warm layer, and a backpack with drink and lunch. Poles are useful in mud or ice. Dogs are welcome on Ramblers walks.
βοΈ Should I contact the leader?
Yes β a quick email or call to the walk leader (details on the walk page) is helpful so they know to expect you.
Once you are a member
π° What will I receive as a member?
A monthly newsletter from Head office, our group newsletter four times a year (email, or post if you prefer), Walk magazine by post, and Stile magazine twice a year from Hertfordshire & North Middlesex Area.
ποΈ Do you run holidays?
The group usually runs two holidays a year β spring/early summer and autumn (often September). Leaders plan the walks; you book your own accommodation. For wider walking holidays see Ramble Worldwide.
